About the Saint Benedict Medal

\n

The Saint Benedict Medal: The origin of the Saint Benedict medal is uncertain (it is estimated to date from the 15th century) but it became famous through descriptions by Saint Gregory due to its effective use by the Patriarch against demonic assaults. There have also been several reports from condemned witches who claimed that the medal prevented them from performing any form of witchcraft or enchantment in its presence.

\n

Pope Benedict XIV recognized and approved the Saint Benedict medal in 1742, consecrating the prayer on the reverse side of the medal as an exorcism prayer (known as Vade Retro Satanás).

\n

Although there are several versions of the medal, the most famous and recurring one was defined in 1880 by monks from the Abbey of Monte Cassino to celebrate the 14th Centenary of Saint Benedict's birth.

\n

On the front of the medal, an image of Saint Benedict wearing monastic robes holds a cross in his right hand and a banner representing the Rule in his left hand.

\n

To his right, we see a snake escaping from a cup of wine (referencing an attempt to poison Saint Benedict) and on the left, a raven carrying poisoned bread.

\n

This medal has a double-sided design – front and back.

On the reverse side of the medal, we see an image of a cross, with the word Pax (peace) above and several Latin inscriptions: C.S.P.B.: Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti – Cross of Saint Father Benedict. C.S.S.M.L.: Crucem Sanctam Sit Mihi Lux – May the Holy Cross be my light. N.D.S.M.D.: Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux – Let not the dragon be my guide. V.R.S.: Vade Retro Satanas – Begone, Satan.
