Pretos velhos or Old Blacks are entities in Umbanda, spirits that appear as elderly African figures who lived in slave quarters, mostly as slaves who died either from harsh conditions or old age. They love to recount stories from the time of captivity. They are purified divinities of former African slaves. Wise, gentle, and patient, they offer love, faith, and hope to their followers. They are masters of wisdom and humility. Through their various experiences across many lives, they have understood that only love builds and unites everyone. Matter allows us to exist and experience events and sensations, but it doesn't exist on its own; we create it for these experiences. Reality is the spirit. With humility, despite their immense wisdom, they assist us in this quest with advice and unconditional love vibrations. They are also masters of nature's elements, which they use in their blessings.
