The OM MANTRA

According to the Mandukya Upanishad, one of the Upanishads (Hindu scriptures that form the foundation of Vedanta and its philosophy), Om or Aum symbolically represents 'the immutable, everything that exists, has existed, and will exist. Everything is truly the syllable Om, and everything that is not subject to the triple time is also truly the syllable Om.'

The Upanishads declare that everything that exists and does not exist can be controlled by intoning the sacred syllable Om. Hindus believe it is effective in correcting errors in fire sacrifices, and meditating on Om fulfills all needs and leads to spiritual liberation. Most prayers and sacred readings are preceded by the recitation of Om.

Om represents union with the supreme and the joining of the physical with the spiritual. This sacred syllable is the first sound of the supreme from which all other sounds arise.
