HISTORY OF THE HAND OF FATIMA The hamsa is known in the Muslim world as the Hand of Fatima (Fatima was the favorite daughter of Muhammad, and the five fingers represent the Five Pillars of Islam) and in the Jewish world as the Hand of Miriam (Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron, and the five fingers represent the Five Books of the Torah). Both religions do not recognize or authorize belief in amulets; however, the symbol has become very popular, falling into the category of superstition. In the West, the hamsa became popular as the Hand of Fatima but can also appear as the Hand of God, Hand of Allah, Hand of Hamesh, or Eye of Fatima. This symbol (before Judaism and Islam) is more precisely associated with the Phoenician world and the Goddess Tanit, whose hand warded off evil and fear.

\n

MEANING OF THE EVIL EYE Its Turkish protective name against the evil eye and envy is nazar boncuk (Nazar - evil eye, boncuk - amulet). The keychain Evil Eye is often called the Eye of Fatima, named after the Prophet Muhammad's daughter, and combines it with the Hand of Fatima amulet to enhance its effects. Although it can take various patterns and be applied in different designs, the Evil Eye is generally composed of a circle, sphere, or drop shape in dark blue with a white and light blue eye overlay. The Evil Eye amulet appeared during the development of glassmaking in the Mediterranean around the 16th century BC. Legend has it that fair-haired blue-eyed men could be malevolent and could send negative vibrations through their gaze. When the Evil Eye breaks or cracks, it has fulfilled its protective function and must be replaced.
