About dragon's blood

Dragon's blood is a red resin obtained from different species of various distinct plant genera: Croton, Dracaena, Daemonorops, Calamus rotang, and Pterocarpus.

These red resins have been used since ancient times as varnish, in medicine, as incense, and as dye. A great degree of uncertainty prevailed in ancient times regarding the origin and identity of dragon's blood.

Some medieval encyclopedias indicated its origin as literally the blood of elephants and dragons that had died in mortal combat. The red resin from Dracaena plants and the mineral cinnabar (mercury sulfide) were often confused by ancient Romans. In ancient China, little or no distinction was made between types of dragon's blood regardless of their origin.

Resins like Dracaena and Daemonorops are still often marketed today as dragon's blood with little or no distinction between plant types; however, the resin obtained from Daemonorops has become the most commonly sold type today, often in the form of large resin balls.

Dragon's blood resin is also produced from the rattan palms of the Daemonorops genus in Indonesian islands and known locally as jerang or djerang. The red latex of the Sangre de Drago tree (Croton lechleri), native to South America, has been used by indigenous peoples for wound healing and its antioxidant properties.
