Dr. Sousa Martins – 15cm

", "description": "

About Dr. Sousa Martins: On March 7, 1843, José Tomás de Sousa Martins was born in Alhandra in a rustic riverside house. The son of a carpenter, Caetano Martins, and a domestic worker, D. Maria das Dores de Sousa Martins, the early years of Dr. Sousa Martins were marked by hardship and difficulties. Young José Tomás lived in poverty which worsened after his father's death when he was seven years old. His mother, Maria das Dores, struggling with three children, tried to ease all the hardships the family faced. In this environment, the child completed his primary studies in Alhandra. At twelve, advised by his mother, he moved to Lisbon where his uncle Lazaro Joaquim de Sousa Pereira had a pharmacy near the Bica elevator on Rua de São Paulo. While helping his uncle at the pharmacy, he continued his studies at the Liceu Nacional de Lisboa and then at the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa, where he obtained his Pharmacy degree at 21 and his Medicine degree at 23. Dr. Sousa Martins' career is filled with honorary titles, academic appointments, civic, scientific, and research positions both nationally and internationally. His reputation reflects his public service, especially at the Hospital de São José, where his philanthropic practice for the poor and needy and his free medical care for patients were most notable. In medicine and teaching, he placed great importance on the psychological component and the human relationship that should exist in medical practice. His relentless fight was against tuberculosis, where he was a researcher, scholar, doctor, and tireless advocate for creating ideal treatment conditions, particularly in the Serra da Estrela region. His fight against tuberculosis exposed him to the disease, as he interacted daily with terminal patients. Perhaps due to extreme exposure, he fell ill and was diagnosed with tuberculosis. After the worsening of his condition and a heart injury, Dr. Sousa Martins passed away on August 18, 1897; for some, a victim of the disease, for others, by suicide with a morphine injection, avoiding the suffering he knew so well. An indefatigable researcher, renowned scientist, and esteemed doctor, Dr. Sousa Martins is a symbol of admiration across all social strata in Portuguese society. His name is synonymous with fraternal love, friendship, mercy, and assistance to the poor, the abandoned, and the needy; it's no surprise that he is honored in his tomb in Alhandra, his statue at Campo Santana in Lisbon, or at the former sanatorium in Guarda. The monuments erected in his honor continue to receive daily visits from followers who, in faith in his spirit, await healing or relief from their ailments or express gratitude for a fulfilled healing request.
