Brief history of Saint Expeditus There is not much information about Saint Expeditus, who was likely martyred in the 4th century in Melitene, Armenia. A popular legend describes him as a Roman military commander of the 12th Roman Legion, known as the “Fulminata,” stationed in Melitene to protect the Empire from eastern barbarian invasions with a total force of around 6,800 soldiers. Being Christian, along with most of his subordinates who were also from Armenia, he was condemned during Diocletian's persecutions on April 19, 303 AD, and was martyred by beheading for refusing to worship pagan gods. Another famous legend concerns his conversion to Christianity. Faced with the temptation of a demon in the form of a crow crying out “cras! cras!” (Latin for “tomorrow”), Saint Expeditus stepped on the creature saying “hodie!” (Latin for “today”), signifying his readiness and willingness to convert immediately. As such, Saint Expeditus is now venerated as the patron saint of urgent causes.
